My Favorite Scene: Big (1988)

There are few scenes in all of cinema as full of pure joy as the piano scene from Big. Tom Hanks’ first nomination as Josh Baskin, a kid who wishes he was “big”, and wakes up as a twenty-something. It could have been a straight comedy, but it’s not. It’s heart-breaking, especially at the end. It’s hysterical, but not in a childish or cheap way. Why? A good part of the credit can go to director Penny Marshall who guided a younger Tom Hanks who was closer to Bosom Buddies than he was Philadelphia, Forrest Gump and Apollo 13. But the reason it works is that Tom Hanks perfectly transfers the spirit and soul of a young boy into an adult’s body. He lost the Oscar that year to Michael Douglas in Wall Street, but I still think he should have won. It’s a go-to scene for me when I want to smile. You cannot watch this scene and not feel better for it as Josh Bascomb’s childish glee spreads to the very head of the company and they do what toymakers should do. They play.

Trailer Time: Justice League War (2014)

The first official trailer for the next DC Animated Movie: Justice League War has hit.  This is the first movie set in the New 52 rebooted DC universe, so if you notice things are a bit off….do what we’ve all been doing and take some xanax.  Honestly, the fist arc of the Justice League book by Geoff Johns and Jim Lee was very average so I don’t know how they’re going to make a movie out of it.  Nothing really happens that hasn’t happened in episodes of the animated series or other animated movies to this point.
