Star Wars, Star Wars Anthology: Rogue One, Star Wars: Rogue One

I think we’ll get our first official teaser trailer for Star Wars Anthology: Rogue One (which will probably be the trailer released to those who attended the Star Wars Celebration earlier this year, around Comic Con.  Geek Tyrant has details on the plot, casting and tone of Gareth Edwards’ film.  I’ve read them, and I don’t think they spoil anything, but I’m putting a SPOILER WARNING on them all the same if you want to stay fresh until the first Star Wars Anthology film hits theaters on December 16, 2016.

Star Wars Anthology: Rogue One is an exciting film project Lucasfillm is developing with director Gareth Edwards. The only official story detail we have for the movie is that it will focus on a band of resistance fighters who “unite for a daring mission to steal the Death Star plans.”

As far as casting goes, so far the actors involved include Felicity Jones, Ben Mendelsohn, Diego Luna, Sam Clafin, and Riz Ahmed. To catch up on any Rogue One-related news before we move on to the new information, click here.

The following intel comes from It offers a little more information on the plot, setting, theme, aliens, droids, vehicles, and more. The details are minor, and there is nothing majorly spoilery here, but I will throw out a SPOILER warning for those of you who are super sensitive about that stuff.

Here’s what they reveal:

  • Definitely set during the “Dark Time” of the Empire (between Episodes III and IV)

  • Being coined as “darker and grittier” than any other Star Wars film to date

  • The film seems to be aiming to be much like an old school war film; Think Hamburger Hill meets Star Wars

  • All the Jedi are said to be in hiding; expect this story to leave them in the background

  • Stormtroopers have same armor as they do in the original films (i.e. episodes IV – VI)

  • Lots of alien life forms, Mon Calamari among them

  • New droids and aliens will be introduced. Kind of a no-brainer, but just so you know it’s not just a bunch of rebels

  • At-Ats, X-Wings, Y-wings, At-Sts are said to be present.

  • Implied that some of the film will take place on Yavin-4; a lot of armies in the jungle and various battlefield locations

  • Looks like a new droid will be part of the band of rebels attempting to steal the Death Star plans

  • Felicity Jones is seen dressed as a rebel soldier ready for battle; expect her to get her hands dirty in this one

I like what I’m reading, especially that this will be the darkest film in the Star Wars saga so far. I also think its perfect that they are looking to capture that old school war film vibe. What do you think about the direction they are taking with this film?

Star Wars Anthology: Rogue One is set to hit theaters on December 16th, 2016.

  1. A movie a year is pushing it. The Disney execs must have total faith that Episode 7 will be one hell of an appealing movie. And yet…

I REALLY hate to say this, but while I was watching Jurassic World in the midst of an audience of people who clearly loved it beyond love, I had a bad premonition. Right now it seems like TFA will hew pretty close to the structure of ANH… Luke’s saber standing in for the death star plans, Captain Phasma standing in for Vader… and it occurs to me that an insanely popular film that does nothing but coast on nostalgia and feed into everyone’s exact expectations could be far worse than a film that everyone agrees is a dud, because it would set a precedent and bring down the quality of the entire subsequent franchise. JW should worry SW fans, because the reboot/reimagine thing? JW just proved it can work spectacularly if the nostalgia and knowing references are piled on thick enough. And the worst part is, it’s hard to argue with success. I think I enjoyed JW much more than you, but it could turn out to be a preview of Episode 7, so I am prepared (though hopeful as always).
