Alright, space lovers, we’re less than two weeks from the premiere of the biggest movie of the summer: Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, so it is only fitting that we choose our official site GUARDIAN! You may select from amongst the original core, as well as Nebula, Mantis, and Yondu, who look like they’ll be joining the team in the second outing. We’ll run the poll through the film’s second weekend to get both your pre and post-love for our most dysfunctional super hero team (and, yes, a vote for Groot is also a vote for Baby Groot). VOTE, my minions, and select your champion!
Now that the chaos of March is done, we have a fairly quiet month reserved for The Fate of the Furious to rule until the summer movie season begins proper in May. Killing Time readers voted and their most anticipated film of the season is the first one out of the gate: Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. Remember waaaay back in 2014 when no one knew (ok, yes, I knew) who Star Lord, Gamora, Drax, Rocket, and Groot were? Marvel took a huge gamble on casting big names and giving director James Gunn all the money he needed to make a science fiction epic and open the cosmic corner of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It opened the first week of August and practically steamrolled the box office for two months, ending up the year’s highest grossing film. Now all those characters and more are movie icons and the sequel is getting the coveted “Marvel May Weekend” summer spot. What a difference three years can make. Amazing as it was, it’s nice to finally put 2016 to bed and to get on to the business of a new year of movies. I apologize for being a big behind on reviews, but I should have that caught up by the weekend. The summer is traditionally where the movie industry showcases their biggest, loudest, splodiest, franchisiest entries, but-let’s face it=summer began last week with Logan. Summer, now-apparently-runs from March to August, but we’re going to be all crazy traditional and limit this year’s Most Anticipated Summer Film to May – August (we’re wacky like that). After a month of frenzied voting, the leader never changed, and the Killing TIme Community has officially selected Rogue One: A Star Wars Story as their Best Film of 2016. Of the 15 possible nominees, 12 received votes, showing the depth of quality movies from last year. This marks the second consecutive year that a Star Wars film has won the top community prize, giving Disney a perfect record since they took over the franchise (I wouldn’t count out The Last Jedi taking 2017). We are eight days from the announcement of the 5th recipient of the KT Reader’s Award for FIlm of the Year. Rogue One is still atop the poll, but it’s comfortable lead has turned into a five-film scrap as Deadpool had a big surge this week and moved into third place behind the Star Wars spinoff and La La Land. The Jungle Book and Captain America: Civil War are tied behind them to round out the top five. Hidden Figures became the 11th different film to receive a vote for Best Picture in this wildly deep year for films, leaving only four nominees without at least one vote. This is going to come down to the wire. Deadpool’s surge completely changed lead margins for Rogue One, and we’ll see if the leader from the beginning, can hold on for one more weak or if last-minute voting will see another film take the prize. This is going to be the last update. Saturday, February 25th will see the announcement of the Community’s pick, and next week will also bring the site’s annual Oscar therapy alternative: The Renaissance Film Awards. If you haven’t yet, VOTE! You can find the poll on the Killing Time homepage at https://justkillingti.me or by clicking here. This is the reader’s choice: make your voices heard!
