Trailer Time: Wonder Woman Trailer #2 (2017)

After August’s Suicide Squad, the next installment on DC’s road to Justice League is the Wonder Woman solo film.  The first trailer for the film was unveiled at Comic Con. The second full trailer is out now, along with three gorgeous posters.  “Gorgeous” is really the best word to describe WW so far.  It looks stunning.  However, every time I hear dialogue, I wince.  Geoff Johns didn’t get hired to start righting the disastrous rollout of the DCEU until after Wonder Woman was done, so his influence isn’t going to be felt until Justice League.  Question is: by the time we get there, is anyone going to care when Marvel is throwing no-hitter after no-hitter?  Starring Gal Gadot, Robin Wright, Chris Pine, and David Thewlis, Wonder Woman is scheduled to open June 2, 2017.

Trailer Time: LEGO Batman Movie Trailer #1 *Darkness, NO PARENTS,…..CONTINUED DARKNESS!!!*

The LEGO Movie had an infinite number of highlights, but it had one of the best Batmans of all-time in Will Arnett’s LEGOized version of The Dark Knight.  So, naturally, he’s getting his own spinoff film, but with the benefit of having the same directors (Phil Lord & Chris Taylor) that masterminded The LEGO Movie.  Joining Arnett will be Michael Cera (Robin), Rosario Dawson (Batgirl), Zach Galifanakis (The Joker), and Ralph Fiennes (Alfred).  The LEGO Batman Movie is slated for a February 10, 2017, release.

Trailer Time: King Arthur – Legend of the Sword Trailer #1 *What the What?*

So many of the trailers that came out of Comic Con got me excited for films next year.  The only one I saw that left me dumbfounded at how amazingly bad it looked was King Arthur: Legend of the Sword.  Guy Ritchie may have been able to turn Sherlock Holmes on its head successfully (the first time), but the Arthurian legend and he seem to have been on different planes passing in the night.  Charlie Hunan was a great fit on Sons of Anarchy, but it’s become clear in every role since that he’s got absolutely no range.  His accent is so all over the place in this trailer, I honestly was laughing by the time it was done.  Ritchie’s hyperkinetic offbeat style is not working in this venue, and the special effects look like they cost a fortune.  In short, I think this film is going to be one of 2017’s biggest bombs.  King Arthur: Legend of the Sword is scheduled for a March 24, 2017 release.  That puts it head-to-head with the Power Rangers reboot, two weeks after Kong: Skull Island and a week after Beauty & the Beast.  In a crammed March, this is going to get flattened.  The smartest move would be to reschedule it in a desolate corner of late summer/early fall 2017 when it might even have a chance to win its weekend.

Comic Con Trailers for Arrow, Flash, Supergirl, Gotham, and DC’s Legends of Tomorrow New Seasons

While Marvel kicks DC’s tail in the movie theater, it’s pretty much even with the quality of the TV shows the publishers put out (much to the benefit of fans).  DC doesn’t have a mature show line like Marvel does on Netflix, but their usurpation of The CW with Arrow still fantastic into its fifth year, Flash just as good into its third, Supergirl moving over from CBS for season two, DC’s Legends of Tomorrow taking on The Legion of Doom in season 2, and Gotham getting ready for The Court of Owls in season three, that’s a pretty solid line-up for fans to look forward to this fall.  Comic Con had trailers for all five series for you to check out below.

Trailer Time: Doctor Strange Trailer #2 (2016) *The Eye of Agamotto Opens at Comic Con!*

The finale to Marvel’s Saturday night panel was the unveiling of the second trailer for this fall’s Doctor Strange.  The second trailer focused more on the supporting cast around the good Doctor and the powers he will wield as the MCU’s Sorcerer Supreme.  Scott Derrickson really looks like he’s nailed opening the supernatural realm of the Marvel Universe to the films.  Benedict Cumberbatch, Chewitel Ejifor, Rachel McAdams, Mads Mikkelsen, and Tilda Swinton will star in the magic epic opening November 4, 2016.
