Trailer Time: Live By Night Trailer #2 (2017) *We’re All Going to Hell*

*Text from Coming Soon

An adaptation of Dennis Lehane’s 2012 prohibition era thriller, Ben Affleck also stars alongside Elle Fanning (Maleficent), Brendan Gleeson (In the Heart of the Sea, the Harry Potter films), Chris Messina (Argo, The Mindy Project), Sienna Miller (American Sniper, Foxcatcher), Zoe Saldana (Guardians of the Galaxy, Avatar), and Oscar winner Chris Cooper (Adaptation, The Town).

Live by Night is set in the roaring ’20s when Prohibition hasn’t stopped the flow of booze in an underground network of gangster-run speakeasies. The opportunity to gain power and money is there for any man with enough ambition and nerve and Joe Coughlin, the son of the Boston Police Superintendent, long ago turned his back on his strict upbringing for the spoils of being an outlaw. But even among criminals there are rules and Joe breaks a big one: crossing a powerful mob boss by stealing his money and his moll. The fiery affair ends in tragedy, setting Joe on a path of revenge, ambition, romance and betrayal that propels him out of Boston and up the ladder of Tampa’s steamy rum-running underworld.

Live by Night is produced by Leonardo DiCaprio (The Wolf of Wall Street, Out of the Furnace) and Jennifer Davisson (The Ides of March, Orphan), under the Appian Way banner; and Ben Affleck and Jennifer Todd (Alice in Wonderland, Across the Universe) for Pearl Street Films. Chris Brigham, Dennis Lehane and Chay Carter are serving as executive producers.

Live by Night opens in theaters on January 13, 2017.

Movie Review: American Sniper (2014) *Mild Spoilers*

american-sniper

I have to give the Academy some credit.  At least one of the movies they nominated for Best Picture was one of the best movies of the year.  American Sniper, the story of Christopher Kyle (the most lethal sniper in US Military history), is a great film, an important film and I hope every theater showing it is as packed as mine was for this film. Trailer Time: American Sniper Trailer #1 (2015) Clint Eastwood, Bradley Cooper

We’ve been due for something really impressive from Clint Eastwood for a while, and American Sniper looks like the film that may deliver.  Bradley Cooper (clearly in Marine shape below), in a film based on a book by the same name, chronicles the split-second, life-taking/life-saving balance atop a sniper’s lonely post.  This first trailer is extremely effective and American Sniper will open wide January 16, 2015.

Trailer Time: Foxcatcher (2014)

Steve Carrell has certainly proved himself as a dramatic actor in the past (watch Little Miss Sunshine if you are dubious), but we’ve never seen him do anything like this.  In Foxcatcher, Carrell plays the schizophrenic murderer John du Pont. The film’s cast also includes Channing Tatum, Mark Ruffalo, Sienna Miller, and Anthony Michael Hall. The film was directed by Bennett Miller coming off of Moneyball.  Here’s the official synopsis:

FOXCATCHER tells the story of Olympic Gold Medal-winning wrestler Mark Schultz (Tatum), who sees a way out from the shadow of his more celebrated wrestling brother Dave (Ruffalo) and a life of poverty when he is summoned by eccentric multi-millionaire John du Pont (Carell) to move onto his estate and train for the 1988 Seoul Olympics. Desperate to gain the respect of his disapproving mother, du Pont begins “coaching” a world-class athletic team and, in the process, lures Mark into dangerous habits, breaks his confidence and drives him into a self-destructive spiral. Based on actual events, FOXCATCHER is a gripping and profoundly American story of fragile men who pinned their hopes for love and redemption on a desperate obsession for greatness that was to end in tragedy.

The film was set to be released on December 20th, but Bennett Miller needs more time to finish the film so the release date has been pushed to 2014, which kind of screws Carrell out of the Oscar buzz he’s been getting for the performance.  But, fear not, a holiday Carrell fix is still in store when Carrell’s Brick Tamland returning in Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues.  Foxcatcher, Steve Carrell, Channing Tatum
