Star Wars Episode VIII: The Last Jedi Trailer 2 – 80 HD Screenshots and Breakdown

So how many times have you watched it?  I’m up to over a dozen viewings of The Last Jedi trailer, and I’ll be honest, my inner 10-year-old kept me up all night running through shots, amazingly cool things, HUGE questions, etc.  The wait was clearly worth it for the trailer, and I have no doubt it will for The Last Jedi proper.  OK, so we’ve watched it to death.  What are the big takeaways?

  • There’s going to be a duality of training: Snoke finally refining Kylo Ren’s power, and Luke initially appearing to agree to train Rey (remember this film will pick up exactly where Episode VII left off).
  • Luke realizes the full potential Rey has and completely freaks out.  It would seem that, at this point, he will stop her training.

  • Not content at patricide, Kylo looks to be severing any connection left to the light, and the implication from the trailer is that he will hunt down and kill his mother.  We know, due to Carrie Fisher’s tragic death, that Leia’s storyline will finish in this film…things aren’t looking good for Leia (whose own storyline for the film wasn’t even touched on as was barely those for Poe, Finn, and Chewie).
  • Crait (the salt flat planet introduced in the last trailer) looks like it will be the scene of an epic battle on the surface, inside the planet (I’m assuming the Falcon is racing through Crait’s interior, but that’s pure speculation as is that the immense space battle is taking place above the mining planet), and over it.  What makes Crait so special?  I’m betting that’s the convergence of Leia, Poe, and Finn’s stories.

  • The convergence of Kylo & Rey’s seems to indicate that Rey, frustrated by Luke’s refusal and with nowhere to turn, takes Ren up on his offer to teach her from Episode VII.  This could be a red herring, but Rey is going to end up in front of Snoke somehow.  Could it be the BIG GIANT TWIST is that Rey is going to join Ren and Snoke?  No, I don’t think so either, but it’s there for us to angst over for two months.
  • One more note: no duel featured in the trailer.  All lightsaber use is in training.  All episodic Star Wars films have a duel, and this will too, but with the interactions between Luke, Rey, Kylo, Snoke…who will be fighting who seems totally up in the air.
  • Rian Johnson seems to have put together a massive blend of action and character-driven drama, and I think we can pretend to know all we want, we’re still going to be surprised.  Now let’s dig deeeeeep.

Mark Hamill in Star Wars: The Last Jedi
Star Wars: The Last Jedi has been the most secretive  of any of the Disney-era films yet, with nary a leak out there aside from those spun off of the teaser trailer (click here to watch) released four months ago.  I can’t help but think that we’re on the cusp of getting the full trailer as we’re now only four months away from the opening of the next Saga film.  Entertainment Weekly’s fall preview issue features two covers for The Last Jedi (still keeping people wondering whether the title refers to Luke or Rey, though Hamill has said it refers to Luke).  The captions provide some interesting details, but the most awesome pic has to be Snoke’s Praetorian Guard, an upgraded look on Palpatine’s Imperial Guard.  Snoke may be a new character, but everything about The First Order seems like an upgrade or an evolution from The Empire, so there is a connection somewhere.  Take a look at these full slew of images and begin to speculate.  It’s not too far now.  Star Wars Episode VIII: The Last Jedi opens December 15, 2017. “The Last” Fantastic Luke Skywalker Tribute Video

This month has been the 40th anniversary celebration of the film that started it all: Star Wars.  Seven more films later, with four more on the way (Lucasfilm has announced the third spin-off will be announced for 2020 sometime in June 2017), the film that started with a farm boy is coming full circle with this Christmas’ The Last Jedi.  “Who is Luke Skywalker?” is the central question that drove JJ Abrams to get involved with the sequels.  After only a brief, cryptic cameo in The Force Awakens, Luke looks to be as central to Episode VIII as any character.  We know he’s not the man Rey expects to find.  The first trailer for TLJ has him condemning the Jedi.  However, Hero Fan Productions “The Last” does a really fantastic job at recapping Luke’s journey, especially in highlighting the parallels with Anakin’s journey and where Luke went right and Anakin wrong.  I think TLJ is a continuation of the journey (we do have several decades of catching up to do), and I don’t think we’ll be saying good-bye to Luke until Episode IX.  Star Wars Episode VIII: The Last Jedi is scheduled for release December 15, 2017.Star Wars Episode IV, Star Wars: A New Hope, Star Wars, Darth Vader, Luke Skywalker, Princess Leia

Star Wars Episode VIII: The Last Jedi Trailer – HD Screenshots and Breakdown

Having watched it about ten times now, the first teaser for The Last Jedi is a decidedly different roll out than either The Force Awakens or Rogue One got.  It’s definitely a teaser; not a full trailer and still gives very little away on plot, but what it does give is pretty jaw-dropping.  It looks like Luke did indeed find the first Jedi Temple, and agrees to train Rey (remember, this film will pick up exactly where Episode VII ended).  Kylo Ren/Ben Solo is on the teaser poster sporting a new scar courtesy of Rey and it looks like he’s ditched the helmet (what would grandfather think?).  Aside from that, the shots are very cryptic; new ships, Finn still recovering, a brief look at the new Super AT-ATs, but the shocker is the end of the teaser and Luke’s opinion of the Jedi.  Far from restarting the order, Luke says, “It’s time for the Jedi….to end.”  Stills from the trailer and more speculation below.
