Trailer Time: Snowden Trailer #2 (2016) *Hero or Traitor?*

There really aren’t many people who have a lukewarm opinion when it comes to Edward Snowden.  People either think he’s a courageous whistleblower for giving journalists millions of classified documents outlining domestic government spying, or people think he’s a traitor and should be executed for giving journalists millions of classified national security documents.  A movie about Snowden seems a perfect project for director Oliver Stone who has elicited a likewise polarizing response among film fans his entire career. Top 5: First Scenes (TV Dramas)

Some of my favorite television shows of all-time take awhile to get into.  Breaking Bad, The West Wing, even Game of Thrones have a lot of world-building to do and, while I can tell you exactly what the opening scene was to each, they didn’t immediately reach into my brain and addict me.  These five shows, from the very first scene (which I have done my best to include; in the case of Justified, you get the whole pilot with my compliments) light you up.  You want more; you want it now.  Whether it’s Will McAvoy (Jeff Daniels) delivering the best monologue in TV history, Raylan Givens (Timothy Olyphant) having an old west shootout in very modern Miami, the chaos of ER and the plane crash of LOST, or Frank Underwood (Kevin Spacey) breaking a dog’s neck and the fourth wall.  You wanted more, and that is skillful writing.  Grab the viewer’s attention so completely within 3-5 minutes that you have them for the run of the series.  These five did the job and then some.

1. The Newsroom (HBO)

2. Justified (F/X)

3. Lost (ABC)

4. ER (NBC)

5. House of Cards (Netflix)

My Favorite Scene: Justified Season One (2010) “Meet US Marshal Raylan Givens”

I’m working my way through Justified Season Five right now on Blu Ray; getting ready for the sixth and final season which will begin in Just a bit over a month.  The series, spreading from the late Elmore Leanoard’s great short story “Fire in the Hole” has gone on to become one of the most consistently well-written and acted dramas with a voice all its own.  This was apparent from the Pilot Episode, which sitll stands as one of the best 45 minutest of TV Ive ever seen, which to f out of the gatess with one of the best show-downs EVER!

Trailer Time: Justified Season Six Teaser #1 (FX – 2015)

I’ve been a huge Justified fan since it dropped one of the best pilots in TV history six years ago, but all good things…. F/X has released the first teaser for the sixth and final season of the exploits of US Marshal Raylan Givens and things are not looking good for him or his nemesis/best friend (depending on the moment) Boyd Crowder. Justified is back in January 2015 so you’ll have to hang on to find out more.

Trailer Time: This is Where I Leave You (2014)

This was on my Most Anticipated of 2014 list as a dark horse candidate, primarily because of the strength of the source material (Jonathan Tropper’s novel) and the HUGE, talented cast.  Jason Bateman, Tina Fey, Jane Fonda, Adam Driver, Rose Byrne, Timothy Olyphant, Connie Britton, Corey Stoll and Dax Shepherd among others.  Check out the trailer above and the synopsis below.  This is Where I Leave You opens in theaters on September 12, 2014.

When their father passes away, four grown siblings, bruised and banged up by their respective adult lives, are forced to return to their childhood home and live under the same roof together for a week, along with their over-sharing mother and an assortment of spouses, exes and might-have-beens. Confronting their history and the frayed states of their relationships among the people who know and love them best, they ultimately reconnect in hysterical and emotionally affecting ways amid the chaos, humor, heartache and redemption that only families can provide— driving us insane even as they remind us of our truest, and often best, selves.
