POLL: What Was the Best Film of 2014?

IT IS TIME!  The Killing Time Community must now perform its most solemn duty of the year: choosing what film they will endorse as Movie of the Year.  This is the 3rd Annual award, with The Dark Knight Rises and Gravity taking honors in 2013 and 2014, respectively.  What movie will receive the coveted golden stabbed watch statue (commonly known as “the Stabby”) this year and all the prestige and fanfare that comes with the honor?  You will choose.  I’ll vote once just like any other member, but the readers decide this award.  I do my own personal awards in a different forum, but that’s just one man’s opinion.  This is the endorsement of the readers.

You’ll note there are 20 films to choose from, and I know that’s a lot, but this is the formula I used to select the nominees:
1. All eight Academy Award Best Picture nominees
2. My personal top eight films
3. Top 4 highest grossing films that didn’t make it on to the first two lists (so that’s why Transformers is there; that’s OUR bad).

I hope this gives you the variety you need to make your decision.  VOTE!   Please, if you read this site, voice your opinion on this one.  The poll will run until the Friday before Oscar Sunday, when we’ll unveil the 2015 Killing Time Movie of the Year!

10 Finalists Announced for Visual Effects Oscar

Dawn-of-the-Planet-of-the-Apes-Kingdom

The ten finalists for the Visual F/X Oscar have been announced.  The list will be winnowed down to five by the time nominations are announced on January 17, 2015.  It’s surreal to start talking about Oscars when there really hasn’t been anything this year to laud.

Here are your ten finalists:

Captain America: The Winter Soldier
Dawn of the Planet of the Apes
Godzilla
Guardians of the Galaxy
The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies
Interstellar
Maleficent
Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb
Transformers: Age of Extinction
X-Men: Days of Future Past

To me, there’s no contest here.  Dawn of the Planet of the Apes took motion capture to entirely new level.  What Andy Serkis and the other apes did was nothing short of revolutionary.  I’d love to see The Hobbit get some kind of recognition, but the Academy dismissed it after the first film.

Why you would want to do this to yourselves, I have no earthly idea, but if you want to exchange currency for the Blu Ray of the fourth film in the Transformers saga, it will hit stores on September 30th and debuting digitally two weeks prior.  Paramount released the extras and there are a lot of them and all almost guaranteed to be more interesting than the film. Movie Review: Transformers Age of Extinction (2014) *Mild Spoilers*

Transformers, Transformers Age of Extinction, LockdownTransformers 4 looks to be on-track to be the first movie of 2014 to open with a $100 million weekend, and-thusly-had to have a Killing Time presence and coverage.  I was fortunate enough that my good friend Peter, The Reasonable Critic, volunteered to do KT’s first-ever guest review, so I will get out of the way and let him tell you of the fourth outing of Cybertron’s best. ~Dave

Long ago I made a vow to only write positive reviews of movies I like, and yesterday, sure that Transformers 4 would be even worse than the first three, I decided to violate that directive as a favor to Dave.  He’s taken far too many for the team this summer. It was the least I could do to watch this for him, and write up a review.  But Dave is going to be sorry he asked me, because I am about to throw his blog into utter disrepute.  I liked Transformers: Age of Extinction. Complete Achievement/Trophy List for Transformers: Rise of the Dark Spark

Transformers Rise of the Dark Spark
Movie tie-in games are not traditionally…good, and when you’re already talking a Transformers movie, there are concerns about the film itself (by “concerns” I mean “raging dread”) then the game is even more of a tenuous prospect. Transformers: Rise of the Dark Spark isn’t technically a movie tie-in, but its release coincides with the fourth installment in the Bay adaptation series. For your cheevo hunting pleasure, courtesy of Xbox Achievements.com, here is the complete list. Hunt away!  The game will release Tuesday for pretty much every platform you could think of including Xbox One and Playstation 4.
