Top 5: Scenes from Forrest Gump (IMDB Top 250 #13)

Forrest Gump, Tom Hanks, Robert Zemeckis

Every other month, we take a look at a movie on the Internet Movie Database’s List of the TOP 250 FILMS OF ALL-TIME.  These are movies that transcend a simple “My Favorite Scene” column.  These are movies that are hard to just pry five gems from, but we do and examine the film overall.  We’re on our thirteenth installment in this series.  Click on the links for The Shawshank Redemption, The Godfather, The Godfather Part II, The Dark Knight, Pulp Fiction , Schindler’s List, 12 Angry Men, The Good The Bad and The Ugly, The Return of the King, Fight Club,  and The Empire Strikes Back to check out previous installments.

At  #13, we come to 1995’s Best Picture: Forrest Gump, directed by Robert Zemeckis.  These columns usually come out faster, and for that I’m sorry, but I’ve hit a road block with this one that I haven’t encountered since we did Pulp Fiction: I really don’t like Forrest Gump.  CALM DOWN!  I respect the film for the performances and for breakthroughs in the craft of film making, but in no way do I think the film is one of the greatest motion pictures of all-time.  “Gumpmania” swept the country in 1994, denying what should have been the most critically recognized film of the year, The Shawshank Redemption, the acclaim it has since received in the two decades since both were released.  Likewise, Tom Hanks has given at least three to five performances that were stronger Oscar candidates than Forrest Gump.  It is, however, undeniably a hugely popular film, and like Pulp Fiction, it does have scenes (most involving my favorite character) that are worthy of recognition and examination. POLL: FAVORITE GUARDIAN OF THE GALAXY???

Alright, space lovers, we’re less than two weeks from the premiere of the biggest movie of the summer: Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, so it is only fitting that we choose our official site GUARDIAN!  You may select from amongst the original core, as well as Nebula, Mantis, and Yondu, who look like they’ll be joining the team in the second outing.  We’ll run the poll through the film’s second weekend to get both your pre and post-love for our most dysfunctional super hero team (and, yes, a vote for Groot is also a vote for Baby Groot).  VOTE, my minions, and select your champion!

Star Wars Episode VIII: The Last Jedi Trailer – HD Screenshots and Breakdown

Having watched it about ten times now, the first teaser for The Last Jedi is a decidedly different roll out than either The Force Awakens or Rogue One got.  It’s definitely a teaser; not a full trailer and still gives very little away on plot, but what it does give is pretty jaw-dropping.  It looks like Luke did indeed find the first Jedi Temple, and agrees to train Rey (remember, this film will pick up exactly where Episode VII ended).  Kylo Ren/Ben Solo is on the teaser poster sporting a new scar courtesy of Rey and it looks like he’s ditched the helmet (what would grandfather think?).  Aside from that, the shots are very cryptic; new ships, Finn still recovering, a brief look at the new Super AT-ATs, but the shocker is the end of the teaser and Luke’s opinion of the Jedi.  Far from restarting the order, Luke says, “It’s time for the Jedi….to end.”  Stills from the trailer and more speculation below. Trailer Time: Transformers: The Last Knight Trailer #3 (2017) *For My World to Live, Yours Must Die*

While they haven’t specifically used the word, it seems clear that Unicron is the threat in Transformers: The Last Knight and that he is responsible for turning Prime evil (didn’t we do that already?) and trying to consume Earth.  While this is the least annoying of the trailers for the fifth live-action Transformers film, it still doesn’t give me any hope that anything has changed.  What’s more chilling is that director Michael Bay is claiming (I gave the source for CONTEXT) that 14 more Transformers films are in the works following next year’s Bumblebee spin-off, which will be a prequel.  Just mull that over.  TWENTY of these if they keep making money.  For what that will cost, we could go to Mars…..and leave Michael Bay there.
