Here’s my advice to you: if you’re going to go see Alien: Covenant in the theater and you have not watched Prometheus since it came out, you will be vastly better informed if you give yourself a refresher course.  Now, if you hated Prometheus, that’s going to be a problem, because Alien: Covenant picks up 14 years after those events and the end of Prometheus spawns by far the most interesting parts of Covenant.  The quick and dirty of my opinion on Covenant, because I am going to have to get into spoiler territory a bit, is that I think two episodes into Ridley Scott’s demystification of the origins of the xenomorphs have convinced me the entire endeavor is a mistake.  Sometimes things become a lot less interesting the more you know about them (Wolverine’s origin should still be a mystery, for example).  Prometheus was gorgeous, dreamed big, was massively flawed, but was admirable in its ambition.  Covenant provides answers….eventually, but is criminally boring in getting to them with 75% of Prometheus‘ budget (no one will be calling this film “gorgeous”).  It’s not Aliens 3 or Resurrection….but, honestly, it’s not even Prometheus. POLL RESULTS: FAVORITE GUARDIAN OF THE GALAXY IS…

null

Though it’s not going to pass the box office juggernaut that is Beauty and the Beast, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 still looks like it will be the biggest film of the summer and certainly was a hit with the fans.  KT asked readers to dub the most awesome Guardian of them all and thus began one of the most furiously contested polls we’ve ever had.  In the beginning, there was Star Lord.  Peter Quill was dominating this poll through week one, and then it became a three-way race for the next two weeks as Rocket and Groot pulled right alongside him locking it into a virtual three-way tie.  However, last week saw a surge of support for the Galaxy’s most gun-obsessed trash panda, and Rocket is the pick as KT’s Favorite Guardian of the Galaxy with Groot at #2 and Star Lord at #3.  Absolutely no love for Gamora or Mantis?  I get Gamora had really nothing to do in the last film but how do you not love Mantis?  Fickle horde.  A new poll should be up in a week.  Thanks to all for the frenzied voting.

Trailer Time: War for the Planet of the Apes Trailer #3 (2017) *For Freedom, For Family, For the Planet!*

Each trailer for War for the Planet of the Apes has looked more and more impressive, and the final trailer before the film hits in mid-July doesn’t disappoint.  What Matt Reeves and Andy Serkis have achieved with these films, both in resurrecting a very, very dead franchise and in pushing the boundaries of the marriage of technology and acting, can’t be overstated.  Gollum will always be the character and performance that created mo-cap acting, but Serkis has spent even more time on Caesar.  In Caesar he’s created such a nuanced, fully-realized creation that I think the last boundaries of what can be imagined and what can be successfully transitioned to the screen are gone.  If you can imagine it, there’s a way to make it happen and make it happen brilliantly.  For that, Serkis deserves the kind of special achievement Oscar Toy Story got when it was released and changed animation forever.  Eventually, there needs to be a fifth acting category for voiceover/motion capture performance, but that exists because of Andy Serkis.  He’s quite literally changed motion pictures forever, and very few actors can have been said to ever achieved that.

In War for the Planet of the Apes, the third chapter of the critically acclaimed blockbuster franchise, Caesar and his apes are forced into a deadly conflict with an army of humans led by a ruthless Colonel. After the apes suffer unimaginable losses, Caesar wrestles with his darker instincts and begins his own mythic quest to avenge his kind. As the journey finally brings them face to face, Caesar and the Colonel are pitted against each other in an epic battle that will determine the fate of both their species and the future of the planet.

Trailer Time: Blade Runner 2049 Trailer #2 “Your Story Isn’t Over Yet. There’s Still a Page Left.”

*Text from Geek Tyrant (This looks phenomenal)

Thirty years after the events of the first film, a new blade runner, LAPD Officer K (Ryan Gosling), unearths a long-buried secret that has the potential to plunge what’s left of society into chaos. K’s discovery leads him on a quest to find Rick Deckard (Harrison Ford), a former blade runner who has been missing for 30 years.

The film also stars Ana de Armas, Sylvia Hoeks, Robin Wright, Mackenzie Davis, Carla Juri, Lennie James, with Dave Bautista, Edward James Olmos and Jared Leto. All of which look fantastic in the role they play.

The movie was directed by Denis Villeneuve and it’s set to be released on October 6, 2017.
